What Does The Projected Increase In Demand and Supply Of Macadamia Nuts Tell Us?

The 2021 crop has shown us that the macadamia nuts industry is on the rise. Both supply and demand are increasing. But how did this happen? We’ve already seen what this pandemic has done to other nut industries. There’s been an increase in the demand for cashews, pistachios, and many other nuts as well.

But for macadamia nuts in particular, what does this increase in demand and supply tell us? Are there trends or any particular reasons everyone should know about? Well, here’s what we found.

What Do These Changes Tell Us?

The changes in demand and supply are inevitable for every major industry. In the past years, we’ve seen an increase and a momentary dip in demand for macadamia nuts. However, in this INC webinar, we learned quite a few things about the industry. Like every major nut and dried fruit in the market, Macadamia nuts are experiencing a surge in popularity.

Here’s why this has happened.

The State of The Industry

The macadamia nut industry itself is doing quite well. Compared to the 2020 crop, this year’s harvest is going quite actually. While last year the crop was affected by the lack of rain (or too much rain in certain places), this year almost every macadamia-producing country has reported good rains that made for the conditions last year as well as better crop production. Last year’s insect problems weren’t faced in South Africa and Australia either, which is why the crops are expected to be of higher yield and quality.

Consumer Behavior

Consumer behavior is one of the biggest driving factors of the increase in demand. As we’ve seen over the course of this pandemic, people have become more health-conscious and have started to use organic, natural products compared to processed goods.

Changing Preferences and Patterns

This change in preferences has impacted the restaurant industry as well. As it recovers from the prolonged lockdowns, the industry has noticed changes in eating patterns and preferences. It has started using natural ingredients to attract a healthier clientele that isn’t afraid to pay a bit more for better quality meals.
